Potential Teacher Strike Update
Posted 1/8/19

This is Fairburn Avenue Elementary School Interim Principal Fonna Bishop with an important message for parents and guardians. Our teachers and school staff work hard every day to help our students reach their full potential. As you may be aware, Los Angeles Unified has been unable to reach agreement on a new contract and United Teachers Los Angeles has announced that its members will strike beginning Thursday, January 10 or Monday January 14 depending on today's cout decision. Despite this action, our school will be open and operating on a regular schedule. Central Office employees will be assigned to our campus to help ensure the safety and well-being of our students and staff, and we encourage you to send your child to school. Meal service will be provided as usual, along with after-school programs operated by Beyond the Bell (for students attending school) and STAR (for any student enrolled in STAR, whether they attend school or stay home).

If you choose to bring your child to school the only access to campus will be through the ROCHESTER Gate. There will be a sign in sheet and when you arrive with your child you will remove a sticker with his/her name on it and then let your child onto the playground for morning exercise. If you choose to sign your child out from school after drop off then you must sign them out in the office.  If you choose not to bring your child to school your child will be marked absent with an understanding that this is a during a Work Action.

Fairburn Teachers have demonstrated professionalism and care so far and whether you choose to join the picket line, stay home, or bring your child to school your decision will be respected.  There may be other non-Fairburn Teachers and concerned parents picketing in front of our school but we doesn’t anticipate any real challenges.

Please monitor KLCS-TV, and the district’s social media accounts for timely updates. If you have any questions, please call me at (310) 470-1344. We look forward to seeing your child at school.

Thank you,

Fonna Bishop

Interim Principal
