
What is the PTA?
The PTA is the largest volunteer organization of parents, educators, students, health and welfare professionals and community members working exclusively to improve the education and well-being of all children and youth at home, school and in the community. It is a National Lobbying Group with local state and district level branches and offices.
The local PTA participates actively on LAUSD and LA County Office of Education committees and task forces and monitors all LAUSD Board of Education meetings. The PTA represents issues of concern to parents to these groups.
Membership dues directly contribute to the success of the of local, regional and national PTA programs and allow parents, teachers and school staff to take advantage of the benefits provided by the local, regional and state PTA as outlined below.
PTA Membership Dues support for the following clinics for those in need:
- Dental and Vision clinics - assists LAUSD children whose parents are financially unable to obtain care. Services include vision exams and eyeglasses, open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Community Outreach Dental Program – Provides education, prevention and referral services for those in need. (Free)
- Student Medical Services Clinic - serves students and their siblings. Services include Regular Check-ups, Cardiac screenings, EKG exam, Immunizations and TB testing, Sports Physicals, Blood Test for Anemia, Urine Test for Diabetes, Audiometry screening for IEP, CHDP and other referrals. (Open Monday, Tuesday and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.)
- Child Welfare Bureau - provides emergency food for needy families through the World Harvest Food Bank.
Other PTA Benefits:
- REFLECTIONS, the “National PTA cultural arts program” for students in grades K-12, honors all participants, judges the entries, and forwards selected entries on for statewide consideration.
- Conducts workshops, conferences and programs for PTA members and the community.
- Collaborates with other LA County PTA districts on issues of community concern.
- Conducts community drives to help the underprivileged, abused or neglected.
- Provides leadership development and officer training for local and council PTAs.
- At Fairburn, your PTA membership dues provide the following to our dedicated teachers, staff, school community, and volunteers:
- School Phone Directory (one per family)
- Annual Holiday Luncheon for all Fairburn Staff
- Founderʼs Day Luncheon and Award Ceremony for outstanding teachers and parent volunteers
- Welcome Back Breakfast for teachers before school starts
- Teacher Appreciation Week
In addition, PTA is responsible for the coordination of Room Parents, the Wednesday Wire, Email blasts, the School Web site, and hosts the Kindergarten Orientation in the Spring for prospective students and their parents. PTA is NOT a booster club or fundraising organization at Fairburn. Its role is to provide a social and hospitable bridge between the teachers, parents and community.
